Free Knitting Pattern. Tetris Baby Blanket with Mock Crochet Edge

It is possible to work the Tetris panel entirely from the chart without using the written pattern. I am a chart person myself.

If you need help with intarsia there are several good tutorials out there. This would make a good first intarsia project, but it does not explain how to do intarsia. Read or watch a tutorial first if you need help.

Size 8 Circular Needle, 40 inches or longer -it is possible to cram all the edge stitches on a 30 inch needle if you must, but it was a struggle -

Two balls each color Sugar and Cream or Peaches and Cream washcloth cotton -you will have half a ball or more leftover of each color, you could probably make 2 blankets with 3 balls of each color and 4 balls of yellow -

Work chart -when knitting – bottom up and left to right.

This pattern is knit in stockinet using intarsia squares. Each square is 10 stitches wide and 14 rows tall. There is one extra stitch on the outside edge of each side of the blanket. Slip this stitch at the start of every row – you will use it to pick up the edging stitches later. When joining new colors or cutting yarn at the end of a color, leave enough yarn to weave in later; I am most comfortable with at least 10 inches.

For some rows that include more than one shape of the same color, you will be working with two balls of the same color in the same row. For some shapes, you will need to cut and join the yarn again in the same row. Do not worry – there are only 12 rows in the intarsia panel where you cut and join yarn.

If you want to use up all your yarn, continue on with the edging in this manner until you are ready for the final scalloped border. Up to this point, the blanket will measure about three feet square, but you could make a really wide edging if you want one. The scalloped border for this blanket takes about half a ball, and if you make it much bigger remember it will take more yarn.

Scalloped Border

The yellow border is made by casting on four stitches, knitting to the end and knitting the last stitch of the row together with a stitch -or two stitches every other time – from the blanket edge.

Row 1 – slip first stitch -the stitch that was knit together with your blanket edge stitch – K1 YO YO K2

Row 2 – K3 P1 K1 knit last stitch of edging together with TWO stitches of blanket edge

Row 3 – slip first stitch K5

Row 4 – BO 2, K4

Repeat these four rows until all edging stitches are knit into the scalloped border. Cast off. Sew cast on edge of border to cast on edge.

Weave in ends, using them to join any loose corners in your intarsia panel. You may want to glue or knot them if you plan to machine wash your blanket.

You may want to block your blanket – mine is not, it is machine washed and dried and the edging keeps the stockinet perfectly flat.

Hi GracieLou, thanks for the pattern. I’m already in the middle of doing my own baby blanket in cotton with lots of ends, so I’m now curious about the glue thing. What do you use to glue ends? Thanks!

  4. gracielou says:

Lisa, I used “crafter’s pick” fabric glue and I put a little bit on the last 1/4 inch of yarn being woven in.

I was looking for blanket edging ideas when I found this pattern. I LOVE IT! I have enough of each color I’ve been using on a baby blanket for my first grandchild (she is 10 weeks old now) to do this next for my second grandchild (he is due in next month)

    So happy I found you!
    Thanks!

  6. Jasmine says:

quaffy’s comment made me laugh. She’s so right that a tetris-crazy mind does work like that! GracieLou thanks for the pattern.

  7. quaffy says:

How adorable! The only mod I’d make would be to include some black background squares because my tetris-crazy mind can’t accept that you can make lines that won’t disappear.

  8. anna williams says:

    its funky

  9. Trudy says:

I love your baby blanket pattern. One question – Did you pick up stitches around the main part of the blanket on one long circular needle and knit all the way around continuously or did you knit the edging border and then seam in all four corners?

  10. Love this pattern. I plan to make this next as a donated blanket for the Linus Project. I love making interesting ones and this definately fits that requirement. Keep up the good ideas!
